Read full description of the books:
(From the blurb) This astonishing novel may well be the finest novel that Patrick White has produced, superior in its intensity of vision even to The Tree of Man, in range and profundity to Voss. It is a work of extraorindary insight, warmed and enriched by a great power of human emotion.
It is concerned chiefly with four people and with the vision that is the centre of their lives but which they keep hidden from the rest of the world. The first of them is a strange woman, whom all the neighbours think mad, living in a vast crumbling house where a wall may crack away or a tree invade the room and hardly be noticed. The second is a Jew who has escaped the gas chambers of Germany,; the third a simple, kind person, a laundress, married to a drinkard; the fourth an aboriginal with an obsessive gift for painting which is his only contact with the world. They are, as people, entirely different: the one thing they share is a vision of that world of which the Chariot is the symbol. Each of them, in some way, has been chosen.
Their lives cross. They also react violently with those of the ordinary people around them, some of them vicious, some merely unimaginative. From this clash and the destruction it brings, they attain their final resolution.
This is a marvellously rich novel which explores several human lives at great depth. It contains enough dramatic, strange and moving events to fill half a dozen books, yet, for all its strangeness, it is also the most accessible fo all Patrick White's novels. It is one of those books that remain with the reader for a lifetime.

Read information about the authorPatrick Victor Martindale White was an Australian author widely regarded as one of the major English-language novelists of the 20th century. From 1935 until death, he published twelve novels, two short story collections, eight plays, and non-fiction. His fiction freely employs shifting narrative vantages and the stream of consciousness technique. In 1973, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature "for an epic and psychological narrative art which has introduced a new continent into literature." He is, quite possibly, the only gay Nobel Laureate.
